Many of the teachers taking the online course have reservations about using the self-assessment as well as peer assessment rubrics. They first think that students will not be truthful. Then after working with and having the students create their own self, peer and team rubrics and having their students use those rubrics, the teachers observe a much more focused and excited group of students. The teachers then share and celebrate their success' and are even willing to share the rubrics that were created.
It's so important to continue to encourage our teachers to allow for their students to be more responsible for their own learning, to be that faciliator that provides what is needed. I know of one veteran teacher that still has a difficult time allowing his students to work in teams, but the more he has begun doing that, the more he is finding true excitement among his students. As he says, It's still difficult for him to step back from the podum, but the students are requesting to team and work together more and more, so he is granting that request. He has shared he would have never stepped out of his comfort zone, had it not been for the Essentials, Thinking with Technology and the Elements courses that he is so thankful for taking.
