I've had good success with Edmodo and a website via my school's webpage, also. Posting updates, information, access to class materials, etc. has been beneficial to students, parents, and me! I don't think in-class communication is the only answer, but I also think as educators we need to protect ourselves. Through Edmodo I offer parents and administrators a unique access code so they are able to see everything that students and I post. Although it's a private site (not everyone can access our Edmodo class page as they could with my school's website), I still feel protected because parents and administrators are still a part of our closed site.
I started using edmodo last year. It is great because students can also respond to each other's questions as well. It is a controlled environment, but gives them the opportunity. You can also put poll questions up to start a discussion or continue a debate from class. We had a discussion about the 16 oz soda size in NYC that started in September with students still debating the pros and cons of it today. The platform helps not only with communicating with students directly, but allows them to communicate with each other. It gives you another perspective in understanding where the actual needs of the students may be.
However, I agree the best communication is still face to face.
Learning should take place in a number of ways in a variety of locations. It should extend beyond the classroom and provide support and direction as needed by students. The tool used, should be determined by the resources available to students and should include the tools that they are comfortable with as well as those provided by the teacher in the classroom. I use skpe, voxer, chat, facebook and twitter to work with students on their platform of choice and schoology in the school to conform to school policy.
I think communication between students and teachers done through varies uses of technology can enhance communication, if used properly. E-mail, school discussion boards and even programs like Skype are many popular choices. However, as a student, I think social media sites like Facebook and twitter should not be used because they come into the personal territory and becomes uncomfortable to communication through them. Also, I believe that technology does not always address all communication needs and face to face interaction is always the best.
I believe that communicating is very important for education. Yes, in class communication is important, but out of class is also an important area. With technology advancing around us, there are so many new, open doors for teachers to used in order to communicate with their students. There are things such as skype and classroom to classroom websites that allow students to interact with other classes and teachers. Teachers should also use emails, personal school websites, and perhaps weekly newsletters so that students can relay that communication back to their parents at home.
I understand there are a lot of different ways to communicate now. Me, myself is more comfortable with in class communication. However, I don't feel in class communication should be the only means, but I do feel it's the best. Another helpful means of communication is Email and skype. Email and Skype gives students the opportunity to receive help about a lesson or so out of class. These means are helpful when help is needed when given homework. It's helpful to me. I still rather communicate with people face to face but sometimes it's not possible, so email and skype substitutes.
hi karen. i'd like to answer your question different from the perspective of the other responses posted here.
communicating with students should change not in the way of finding other means of conveying messages but more of a change in the attitude of getting in touch with them. what i mean is that students nowadays need to be understood better. there are so many factors that affect the change in their behaviour and only a true heart can best communicate with them.
i believe we need to show them more heart. that's the way we should change our communication with the students.
I agree with Mr.dela Torre they more that you will not ride on with your students the more that their behavior will not be corrected.I;m not saying that you will not have control on your students but the best communication to be effected is to know your students well, what are the things that they have, capitalized on it and wha are the things that they hate to do,that what you are going to improve...........thanks
