I have used http://avatars.yahoo.com you need to have a yahoo account to build one and then its fun, fast and easy - you may hgave to search a bit to export it for external use.
I liked using http://www.nobleavatar.com/ - it has a java applet that loads right in the page and exports to png file format. Do not use the Save As feature as this won't give you an easy file format to work with, instead use the Export As option.
Let the fun begin! Avatars- so cool and fun to use! Here are just a few:
1. Doppel Me www.doppelme.com
With DoppelMe you can create a cool graphical likeness of yourself, your friends, family or any group of peoplefor use as an avatar in forums, instant messenger, blogs and almost anywhere else on the web.
2. Face Your Manga http://www.faceyourmanga.it/welcome.htm
3. Kerpoof http://www.kerpoof.com
4. Meez http://www.meez.com
Have fun playing,
I used http://www.befunky.com/uvatar/index.php to create my uvatar! This site let's you upload your picture from your desktop, or web cam, or URL. Once the picture is uploaded, you will need to crop the face... leave a little extra room around the head. In the next step you will need to place dots around the edge of the head to lift the head from the picture. Next, you will place the head on an appropriate body (male or female)... then save. Now the fun part... you can add the extras... clothes, background, accessories, etc. Have fun... I did!
Now, this is a site I have to try out. It reminds me of the Elf Yourself site where you upload a picture to be placed on an elf body, they sing and dance to a Christmas tune and then you can send it to all to enjoy. We had the best time with this over the holidays.
Thanks for sharing.
You will love the uvatar creator. There are so many wonderful combinations to use to create a unique picture. I received an elfyourself email greeting this past holiday. (http://www.elfyourself.com) It made me laugh too. Can't wait to see what they come up with next year.
I am a TOTAL GEEK at heart. I used Photoshop along with GIF builder to create my avatar. A "FREE" online app that is similar to Photoshop is Pixlar.
OK, I had time on a cold Sunday in AZ. I know, that sentence is hard to believe, but yes, it is cold in AZ today and I had nothing else scheduled to do.
Thank you, Theres, for starting this discussion. I had no idea how people made those pics of themselves and never took the time to learn. I have checked out all the sites mentioned below. Some were easier than others, some had better features than others. However, I still have to say I have no Avatar. After about 2hrs, I created Avatars using two different programs and tried with a third, but technical difficulties aborted its conception. The good news is...I have Grown. That is the purpose of this community, isn't it?
Although I now know how the Avatars were created, I realize this just isn't for me. I will just have to find a real pic of myself to upload. That is if there will be another cold day in AZ when I have nothing to do.
Other than the ones listed already, I have used http://simpsonsize.com. It is real easy to use with students. They have a great time using it and when they post on their wikis, we use their simpsonize portrait.
Our students use this Avatar site - http://illustmaker.abi-station.com/index_en.shtml
And this one was shared with me recently that I absolutely adore - http://www.blessthischick.com/btcmachine/index.php
Just found a new Avatar site to "Simpsonize" you! I created my own Simpsonize Me eCard at the site. At the Simpsonize me site, you enter some basic information (gender, age, kind of dresser you are etc.) and then modify your avatar as you complete the process. There is an option to download the Avatar, but I have not yet been successful in getting it to download on a Mac. I, however, was able to take a snapshot of the avatar and have attached it to this post.
Thanks- The site were using previously is now blocked (http://www.voki.com).
Another teacher just shared this with me. Voki now has an education site....http://www.voki.com/Voki_for_education.php
"...The very first page has a link for lesson plans and a Teacher's corner with tips and ideas on how to use Voki in the classroom."
I just found an avatar site that was easy to use and fun- Mad Men Yourself- very retro! Anyhow I just love my new avatar!
Okay, I know this discussion is probably beat to death, but I came across this from my PLN and thought it would be a great culminating post There may be something new here.
Avatars Everywhere: 27 of the Best Avatar Makers
I know many of us have seen the fun avatar types of images that can be created by "PhotoBooth" on a Macintosh. If you have not used it before, I've attached one picture of me taken with PhotoBooth.
I found an online tool called cameroid that allows you to do the same fun stuff from any computer's browser.
I'm glad you like my attempts at humor while creating avatars (and just about everything else!)
I like the "far out" California look you showed.
I just realized how cool my avatar is ... I caught someone taking a picture of it .
I was visiting this thread for some ideas for my PhotoFun session for my teachers. Did I hit the jackpot when I found this tool - cameroid. I LOVE it. I am going to use my webcam that I won at the Intel birthday webinar and show them how to create a fun image and then we are going to put them in Blabberize and make them talk. I am so thankful to have the webcam that has the mic because the lab does not have microphones. The webcam will become part of my checkout to the teachers...YEA LOVE IT!
For the artistic group...
If you are a fan of Picasso, try this avatar site:
Ok found a pot of gold today- check out this book collection of avatar and character creators. http://www.wobook.com/WBIn4uD37Z2L
This ebook is created by Wobook: http://www.wobook.com/ Just think- you could create your on digital book and sync it to your ipod touch or ipad for student and teach learning- this is too cool. Wobook creator is similar to Yudu and Issuu and Zinio and Zmags and Calameo
My turn... I had to read all the postings to see if anyone had posted it yet. I created my avatar with Marvel's Create Your Own Superhero:
I enjoyed playing with the different features and coming up with my own superhero avatar! Besides, I am a huge fan of comic books
In honor of the world cup- I choose to update my Avatar - using Portrait Illustration Maker - it was quick and easy - and because I can add up to three customized Avatar's I can keep my previous avatars and add this new one.
So think about updating your avatar and change to something fresh.
