Unit plan


Students of Primary Section play a role of Municipal officer aim to reduce pollution of kharadar after Eid-ul-Azha. They use internet to create an online tool wiki in which they share their ideas of project with other teachers and students both and they think about the ways to clean the area from animal blood and organs. They get together to set up an effective use of technology as a communicative tool’s in the school. They take interviews of doctors about Gastro problems after eid. They talk to common men about this problem & take suggestions. They prepare a multimedia presentation to share information on pollution after eid –ul-azha and its harmful effect in community. Students collaborate with City Naib Nazim Ms Nasreen Jalil to present their ideas for reduce the pollution in kharadar area. They take permission to use kukri Ground for Qurbani of all animals instead of roads & narrow streets.

  Instructional Procedures
Introducing the unit (1 period, 40 minutes)
Guide students to realize the impact of our daily activities on Eid-ul-Azha, Then, pose the essential question:
 

  • What can I do for others?

Provide time for the students to think and write down their responses in the student journal. Have students share their thoughts about the question.
Introduce the project entitled “Eid-ul-Azha” using a presentation slideshow. Explain the role and tasks that students need to carry out. Draw students’ attentions on the need of awareness of Cleanliness and Islamic point of view means the reason to celebrate this event in Islam. Tell them to set individual and group goals for working together to complete the project successfully.

Research on Eid-ul-Azha

Inform students that their first task is to search the information on the following topics by a research support handout that contains a list of websites and research template. Encourage students to seek further information from other sources.
Make students sit in groups and discuss their findings.

Ask them to divide into four groups accordingly and divide each topic to search at least 5 page documents in each topic. Write the articles on word & share with the class by uploading documents in on line tool wiki.

Real case studies

Provide time for each group to read the heading and discuss about the questionnaire for interview. Inform that each group will be responsible for taking interview of the following three areas.
Group # 1 Task: Role of Butchers on eid day

Ask them to take interviews of butcher in the community by a questionnaire given by teacher. Inform them that they evaluate this interview session by communication checklist provided by teacher.

Group # 2 Role of community members on eid day

Ask them to take interviews of community members by a questionnaire given by teacher. Inform them that they evaluate this interview session by communication checklist provided by teacher.

 

Group # 3 Role of government on eid day

Ask them to take interviews of government employs of KMC by a questionnaire given by teacher. Inform them that they evaluate this interview session by communication checklist provided by teacher.

Conference

Ask them to discuss about the following topics in a conference in two groups.

  • Present suggestions on health problems after Eid-ul-Azha.
  • Present suggestions on pollution of roads & street after Eid-ul-azha

Get them engage in group discussion & ask them to write suggestion on a paper to share with each other. Inform them to collaborate with teachers to get more suggestions for these points.

Creation of a OMMA youth club

Inform the young managers of KMC that now they have to make a club to solve this problem of cleanliness. Make students discuss in their respective groups about the departments of OMMA youth club. Ask them to divide them into two groups and assign them the given following roles to complete the project.

Inform students to work under the guidance of teacher. Discuss the roles and responsibilities of these departments needed to complete the task. Make students think about the upcoming duties of these both departments. Allocate about one week for students to prepare themselves to start the work..

Social Survey

Explain that it is time for them to conduct a social survey to know about the views about cleanliness and harmful effect of pollution. Ask the students to divide into 3 groups and complete the views of the following areas. Help groups if needed.  Make each group add views in wiki page wise to share views. Remind students to write their comments group wise in each page.

Preparing multimedia presentation
Provide time for students to discuss and compile the data collected during the previous week. Inform them that their next task is to prepare a multimedia presentation. Inform the students that the presentation needs to answer the unit question & ask students to plan their presentation using the presentation planning template (PPT 186KB). Make each group prepare a storyboard of the presentation. Give inputs to groups if needed.
Provide time for students to finish their presentation. Guide students accordingly as they prepare their presentation. Have frequent meetings with each group to check on their progress.

 

 

Strategies of Club

Make students determine the importance of these departments to solve this issue. Introduce the activity to create a wiki for providing and sharing information. Make students discuss and plan their wiki using the wiki scoring guide . Allocate about a week for students to prepare their wiki. Fix meeting sessions with each group along the week and guide them whenever required.
Ask them to prepare questionnaire for meetings. Remind students to present first power point presentation in front of following persons to show the views of different people, the condition of area in Eid   Days, as well as the views of public and then start meeting with the following persons. Inform them to present their strategies among them as students point of view.

Wrap up the project

Have students present their multimedia presentation by adding the views of these people and highlight the points which are in favor of community.  Also make students briefly explain to the audience how they cleaned the area of kharadar. Invite a few teachers to evaluate students’ presentation and wiki using the presentation rubric and wiki scoring guide. Provide opportunity to students to complete their task by awareness campaign in their school.

Encourage students to continue their effort in kaharadar cleaning project. Have students share the views of authorities of Karachi by arranging an awareness campaign in school.

Ask them to make a list of people and invite them in program. the main agenda of this session is implementation.

Ask them to start implementation by aware community members that what will the next step in this eidulazha. Let them sit together to prepare a letter of agreement for important community members. In awareness session all the students distribute the roles & responsibilities as community members.

Create a brochure
E
ncourage students to continue their effort by preparing brochure for community. Have students share their learning with their peers for design a brochure and have students write down their strategies in a brochure. Distribute this brochure in Kharadar community.

Congratulate the students for their accomplishment of the project and encourage students to continue their effort. Have students share their learning with their peers.

Revisit the essential question: How can I contribute to a better tomorrow? and have students write down their thoughts in the journal. Conduct a short discussion on students’ responses on the essential question, before and after the project. Make students realize the importance of working together to make this world a better place.

  • Basic knowledge on the current issues of – pollution spread out by human being.
  • Fundamental skills of basic computer operations and ability to use word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software.
  • Students may need mini-lessons on wiki.
