    As defined by Wikipedia... “Educational games are games explicitly designed with educational purposes, or which have incidental or secondary educational value. Educational games are games that are designed to teach people about certain subjects, expand concepts, reinforce development, understand an historical event or culture, or assist them in learning a skill as they play.

     

    Educational Games have been around for generations, but of course, they have evolved over the years. We all remember educational learning games like Oregon Trail, Number Munchers, and Sim City. We knew they were educational and stimulating to students, but did we ever make the connection to the benefits of how games were assisting students in learning a variety of essential 21st century skills? 


    Why do we use “Educational Learning Games” in the classroom?  According to a study done by Malone and Lepper (1987), there are four key characteristics of an Educational “Learning” Game: Challenge, Curiosity, Control and Fantasy.
