    Classroom Challenge – Fun Infused Learning: Game On – November 2015


      Can gaming improve academic achievement?






      According to Robert Torres, a senior program officer at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, gaming can help increase knowledge and skills, allow students to interact differently than traditional classroom methods—to take on a role, set a goal, experiment with identities and understand interlocking systems.


      Learners solve authentic problems, explore theories-in-action, fail safely, and see the impact of their individual decisions while gaining experience and fluency.


      Games are not just good for learning, but problem solving, critical thinking, tracking progress, assessment and encouraging trial and error!


      This month’s challenge will explore gaming and how it can be used to advance academic achievement.  Click on the images below to visit the url for the resources provided.  Explore the resources and complete the task as outlined.

      Lesson Ideas

      1.  Beat the clock in a game of speed grid; earning higher score with each attempt

      2. Research Zanzibar, Ujiji and possible issues to be confronted during an expedition from Zanzibar to Ujiji

      3. Discuss and compare the plight of immigrants as they seek a better life

      4.  Research facts about jobs and education requirements and read interviews with real scientists

      5. Research drugs and alcohol and their interaction in different body systems: digestive, circulatory, and nervous.  Create a video of findings

      6. Collaborate with peers to complete projects, presentations or other assignments

      Your Challenge

      So how can you infuse fun with learning?  It is simple; gamify it!  You can start by completing this month’s challenge.

      1. Take an expedition from Zanzibar to Ujiji.  Share something significant about Ujiji?  Did you make it to Ujiji before running out of supplies and ending the game?  How many miles did you travel?
      2. Test your ability to solve math problems by taking the speed grid challenge.  Set your problem set for 10 and your time for 2 minutes.  Were you able to solve all problems within the 2 minute time limit? What were your results?
