              Hydon,

I am unfamiliar with what is available in the Philippines. However, Chromebooks are made by several different companies (Acer, Asus, Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba and others.) They may not be called Chromebooks in your area. However, the "laptop" has a Chrome OS, so you should be able to find one nearby. The cost is usually quite a bit less than a traditional laptop.

It's very sad to say that we haven't experienced to use that Chromebooks in our classroom.

The problem with the chromebook is the software Google, If you need other program, there isn't way of install.

Marco says the Google software can be a problem. He is right that the Chromebook runs on Google OS and therefore one can use Google Apps for many tasks- there are google apps which emulate the MS Office apps, and lots and lots of Google apps & extensions make productivity a breeze. The machine is really meant to be a durable, relatively inexpensive replacement for a laptop, but storing documents, etc. in the cloud. Be sure to check out other discussions in Engage regarding the Chromebook. Use the little search bar at upper right and type in Chromebook.

True- it's not for every use, but for classrooms, it's a great way to go! Anyone have questions about how one would complete certain tasks? I'll see if I can answer, and if you have an answer, please chime in!

We use Chromebooks in our district and we have come to love the device. There are a few things the CB can't do, but there are so many more useful things it can do. Teachers and students like that the CB only takes about 8 seconds to power on: instructional time is so valuable. The device is light weight and fits perfectly in a backpack. There is no software to load or update. The device is perfect for students because it is low maintenance. Durability is an issue, but can be fixed by giving students a crash course on how to properly handle the device. I made screen-cast to demonstrate proper care of the CB. We are a Google Apps district; it's like a marriage ( Chromebook & Google Apps) made in heaven. The Chromebook has been great for our district.

This year, we successfully obtained a ChromeBook cart for each of our English Language Arts teachers. The teachers have 40 ChromeBooks available and a dedicated wireless hub in their classroom. A few months ago, there were some connectivity issues which only allowed about half of the Chromebooks to connect online at once. Our district IT specialists came to the school and did testing. The result was installation of new wireless hubs in all the rooms. Connectivity has been flawless since that change.

The English Teachers meet weekly to discuss best practice. There is only one teacher who has students doing the "Same" assignments as before. All other teachers have "Modified" or "Augmented" previous tasks to take advantage of the ChromeBook power. Students enjoy how quickly they connect to Drive and can collaborate with documents.
