Research conducted at Harvard concluded that reading five books can help students to better retain literacy skills over the summer. North Carolina Department of Public Instruction used the Harvard research to create the Give Five - Read Five Campaign to reduce the summer slide. To meet the goals of the program, parents, business leaders and community members are encouraged to donate 5 books to elementary schools for students to take home at the end of the school year. Students read the five books in the summer to enhance their skills.
