Now that the Digital Viewer is up and running, what are your thoughts and examples of using the Digital Viewer in your trainings? Provide examples of how you are using it to facilitate your ST and MT trainings.

          Vanessa,

I tried using the Digital Viewer simultaneously with the PowerPoint presentations. Within about two slides, I quit using the PowerPoint. Everything that I needed to focus on I could highlight in the Digital Viewer. Some teachers had challenges saving their Digital Viewer file. One teacher was positive it was due to User Error on her part. Another teacher successfully was saving the file, but could not open it in Digital Viewer. (Support was contacted and is trying to figure it out.) I think there is a great potential for using the Digital Viewer in trainings where teachers bring their own laptops to use. It could easily change the mindset of "where we do trainings!"

I have used the viewer in 2 Transforming Learning with One to One trainings and I LOVE IT! There are a couple things I really like:

            1. It lends itself to having the participants really review a section of content. I can have "Module 2, Activity 1, Step 3 up on the projector, and show participants what I want them to review/read as well as show them where they will be typing in answers to questions. I found that my participants actually did type in answers - and often in trainings using the manual, they didn't write in it at all
            2. I also love the links right to the web - no more typing in incorrect urls, etc. My training doesn't use the Help Guide, but for Essentials and TwT, the direct link right to the Help Guide step is invaluable
            3. I also really like having the tabs and how easy it is to move back and forth between the manual content and the resources. Again - all there - no having to put a CD in, navigate it, etc.

All in all, I have gotten great feedback with it - there are still a few glitches that come up here and there - but they are being worked on. And as we all know, techonology isn't perfect

Great points everyone. The reason why I posted this thread is that I just received my copy of the Digital Viewer and as I was going through it I was blown away with the features and how easy and convenient it was. I love the fact that you can highlight and make comments. I just discovered you could highlight in different colors just like in my binder. How cool is that. I also like that the links to the PowerPoint presentations are embedded right in the text. No more searching for the presentations.  In my curriculum binder, I have made notes and have post-its all over the place. I have only had a chance to go through the first few modules, but I was able to take those highlights and post-its and transfer them to the Digital Viewer.

I really don’t think there is a need for PowerPoints.  Looking to hear what others have experienced

                Loving it!!!

I have not used it yet, but thanks to you, I will spend the weekend exploring it.  Any suggestions?

Try the highlighting and additing text to the Notes section. Very cool.  I really like how you can highlight in different colors. (Simply things make me happy) I often used two different colors in my printed binder.  I also like how the presentations are embedded right in the text. Teachertraining just sent out an email today and will start shipping them. Hopefully as others receive theirs in the mail and start using them to facilitate trainings, we can get more posts here.

The only thing I would like to see is that all the files that you need having links to them. For example, the Brainstorming, Essentials Questions, document, I had to go to the resource tab to find it, there was no link to take me directly to that document.

Let us know what you think. I'm loving it. I don't think I will need a Powerpoint.

I received and email yesterday to order my digital viewer. Does anyone know if all MTs received that email or was it just STs?

Mine should be arriving any day.  I can't wait to explore.  I will be checking back to this discussion thread to share and see what others are finding.

Vanessa, well, I finally found a few minutes to look at the digital viewer and as I just now look at the clock minutes have turned into hours!  This is a fantastic tool.

I'm sure I haven't even begun to scratch the surface yet, but what I have seen, I really like.

I have a couple of questions.  When the teachers are asked, or given the opportunity to type in their responses to a prompt or group discussion, I found the way to view their notebook, but I was not able to save those response.   Maybe I haven't looked hard enough yet, but if there is, I haven't found it.  I was also able to write notes to myself concerning a particular activity or step, but after saving it and closing the CD, when I opened the zip file, the error message told me that it couldn't find the file. That was also a problem in the first question.

                          Where did I go wrong?

Hi Neil - not sure if anyone answered your question yet - if they did, here you go again:).

It is really important after the first time your teachers type anything in the viewer to go to "file" - "save as" - and have them name the file something like "Notes Essentials Course", and have them put it on their desktop (or anywhere they will easily find it) and then click "save file".

At the end of the day, make sure they have clicked on "save" to save anything else they have typed in there.

Then the next day, immediately after they have opened the viewer , they need to go to "file" - "open" - and navigate to wherever they saved the files (they will be in a zipped format).

They click on that and whatever notes they have previously written will upload to the viewer and off you go.....

If you don't have them save their files, when they close the viewer, everything they have typed will be lost - and when you close the viewer it DOESN'T ask if you want to save the files - it just asks if you really want to close to viewer.

                                Hope that helps.....

                                Bonnie Feather

I just got mine!  I won't use it in a training for a few weeks yet, but I am very excited to have the materials in digital form rather than using all that paper!!!  It's so much easier to find text digitally with the search!

I like the feature of being able to highlight text and also to open some pages in the windows media viewer- they are much clearer.  I wonder how that works on the Mac?  I am out of town working right now with only my windows computer, but I am eager to open the viewer on both platforms and compare.

Are others finding them pretty much exactly alike on the two platforms?  Any issues foreseen with trainings using mixed platforms and the viewer?  Are the page numbers the same, for instance?  I guess it won't matter if we direct them by module> lesson> activity number.

                                Bonnie

I'll respond to your last few questions, because I've done both presentation styles and I like both.  Not sure which method I'll use next.

If you are presenting with PPT, instead of using the page numbers or binder activity you will just refer people to the module>activity>step. (3.1.1)  Continue to use the ppt as a "to do" or "direction" reminder and let the participants locate that particular section in their viewers.  I edited my ppt to include the digital viewer locations as a reminder on the slide.

If you are presenting from the digital viewer, you can display the module>activity>step to the group.  They can all follow you by seeing the hierarchy listed on the side of the viewer that you display. Their screen sizes may differ, but they can find your location.  You can also highlight on your display a section that you want them to find on their viewer.  Allow them some time to use the bottom navigation to find the same selection that you are referring to, which is not always the same exact display.  (Unless you have control on the training location equipment and can set the monitor preferences to be alike.) However, it was not an issue once participants get used to way the viewer displays the text.

PCs and Macs were present in my last group using the viewer.  Macs struggled a little more with the "saving" of notes for some reason, so you might try it on both to see if there is a difference that you notice before the first day.  Overall, no difference between the Mac and PC users ability to use the viewer.

I love the technology of the digital viewer and the saving of paper!  I also see the value of the binder for recording ideas and marking information, with the digital viewer I just do a little "Digital Viewer Bootcamp" on the first day to show the users how to replicate what they would do in a paper binder on the digital viewer.

I've done it where I share the digital viewer tips all at one time, and I've also done it where I filtered them in at appropriate points.  Both methods seemed to work.

                                    Doug

(ps remind the user to save notes so they won't forget)

I'm not training right now but still find the digital viewer to be a great tool!  I used the Help section tonight to find out some information about Excel and then got caught up in reviewing all of the great resources. I really love that you can make the test size larger, but the highlighting and ability to create notes are such wonderful tools for any facilitator! Thanks for all of the hard work that went into creating this!

I received my viewer and was so excited to share it with my participants.  The problem . . . . Teachers at the school are not allowed to load software and because the digital viewer required the software to be loaded, the participants were not able to use the viewer.  The technician had to change the settings for the training to allow access.  Word of caution, when setting up your training, make sure you not only check to see if the computers have CD drives, but can load the CD on the teacher login as well.

                                            Hello Everyone

I have been hearing and reading comments about digital viewer regularly. I have come back on the community after a while as i had a baby boy and was busy raising him. Now that I am back I am really curious to see and use this digital viewer with my teachers. Please note that now I am working as Director "Continuous Professional Development Program" for teachers For more details please visit our site www.pef.edu.pk

(Previously I was working as Senior Trainer and Coordinator Punjab for Intel Teach Program. I initiated Intel Teach to the Future Program in Punjab. In Sept. 2010 I was informed that my services are no longer required but thanks to engage community that I am still a part of this great community through which i introduced a number of teachers from Pakistan on blogs and discussions like TEVTA teachers, Essentials in Lahore, Principals Meet etc. I worked for 9 years with Intel teach)

I am very lucky to again find a job that is also my passion i.e. work on quality of education for our children in Pakistan. My present department arranges and finance Teachers training program across 34 districts of Punjab through NGOs who sign MoU with us, as well as provide Subject Specialists of English, Math, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics to institutions on request. These subject specialists (SS) are like mentors who work in far off slum areas to improve quality of education as well as work on "School Level Mentoring". Apart from this we have a number of very important program, you can visit our site.

Recently in revamping of our program we have to hire 25 computer teachers to help SS in subject based researches and using modern methods of teaching and learning in the class room. Right now I have 94 SS working for me and the target is 131 for June 2011 and 240 onwards subject to funds available. I am having a grand event of 3 days in March 2011 where we will introduce enhancement, refreshers, and focus group (subject wise) sessions for the first time since these SS were appointed in 2006 when the program was initiated.

I would really love to see how we can use digital viewer during this session to help our teachers with latest content for their professional development. My plan is also to encourage Science teachers to participate from remote areas with their projects in Science and Engineering Fairs in future. I would need suggestion if I could have a copy of digital viewer and how could I use it at our enhancement workshop in March 2011.

Please do visit our site and see the important things on which PEF is working and give me suggestions as to how can I make a difference at the post I am working at present.

                                            Looking forward for great ideas

The Intel Education Viewer is only available with our courses - it is not something you can put other content into - and that is what it sounds like you are wanting to do.Your new job seems like a great fit for you - and that you are really enjoying it!

Thanks Shelly. Since i met you last in Bangkok, i got married and have two kids now. a daughter 3 years old and my son.

I might not be able to clear my point regarding Digital viewer. Naturally it is copyright of Intel and no one can add or put their personal content on it. Only those going through through GS or EC trainings can use it. Most of my SS have gone through Intel Teach Trainings in the past but they have not been able to attend any refresher or enhancement workshops after training and hence have no update information regarding Project Based Learning especially the kind of progress Intel Teach has made in areas like assessment and EC V10.1. I was thinking that since they are coming for a meet from far flung areas to a central location we also fix some time to share with them the progress regarding this area and encourage them to join engage community and enhance thier skill in project based learnging by going through elements. like I said that most of them are Master Teachers/Participant teachers of Intel Teach and if they are polished they can go back to their areas  and help encourage teachers to go for such trainings during summer vocations.with them as participants.

Yes I am enjoying my new job and responsiblities. I am in touch with hundreds of teachers and want them to see as Instructional Designer in their own capacity. Morevoer since some of them are Master Teachers from intel Teach i want to use them as mentors for the rest to furhter enhance their skills of teaching in the light of 21st century environment.

                                                    Regards

I did a training one day without the viewer and the second day with the viewer.  My participants were so excited to have all links, activities and reading materials all in one location.  I am sold!
